Mwavuli means 'parasol' in Swahili, and this shopper is covered in them: rows of open parasols seen from above in red, green, turquoise and black, like a beach full of shade on a bright afternoon. With her cheerful print, Mwavuli turns an ordinary errand into something festive.
This bag is lovingly handmade in our atelier in Mtwara, where women are given the opportunity to learn the craft. Mama Asha chose this print because the circles reminded her of market umbrellas standing side by side, each one sheltering someone's small business. Each Mwavuli shopper is made with care and precision, combining traditional techniques with a bold, graphic look.
