About us
When I first came to Tanzania to see if we would live here for a few years, I was deeply moved by the living conditions of the people.
During a visit to a women's center run by a German NGO in Mtwara, I met women who, despite many challenges, used their talent and strength every day to become independent and pursue their dreams.
Their determination and courage left an unforgettable impression on me.
That encounter was the beginning of what is now Nguvu — a name that means strength in Swahili.
My dream is simple: to contribute to a fairer, more beautiful world by creating products that tell a story and make a real difference.
From bags to jewelry and home accessories – each product is crafted with care and love, helping to build a future full of opportunities for the women who create them.
The Meaning of Kitenge
The colorful Kitenge fabric we use is more than just a material — it's a symbol of creativity, culture, and connection.
Originally inspired by Indonesian batik, the technique was brought to Africa by Dutch traders in the 19th century.
Although the fabrics were once European-made, African communities embraced them with their own artistry and transformed them into something deeply their own.
Today, Kitenge represents African identity, strength, and storytelling — every pattern and color carrying meaning and pride.
As a Dutch founder, I find it really wonderful to work with this fabric — one that connects my own heritage with the women I collaborate with in Tanzania.
Fair and Safe Working Conditions
For us, it is essential that the women who make our products work in a safe and healthy environment.
No risks, no exhausting hours — just good facilities, normal working days, and a living wage that goes beyond the minimum.
This allows women to use their talents to build an independent life for themselves and their families.
Women's Empowerment
At Nguvu, everything revolves around women's empowerment.
We believe that women can truly shape their own lives when they have equal opportunities, the freedom to make choices, and a voice that is heard.
Empowerment goes beyond work — it includes education, economic opportunity, social recognition, and personal strength.
I still vividly remember a small room in Mtwara. There was Maria, a talented seamstress, working among inspiring quotes on the walls. On the whiteboard was written: "Independency is empowerment."
Those words perfectly captured the vision of Nguvu: equality, freedom, and the celebration of talent. That encounter marked the beginning of a collaboration that changes lives — step by step, product by product.
Changing Stories Together
Our products are not only stylish; they carry stories of hope, strength, and transformation.
Every purchase supports women as they build independence and contributes to a fairer world.
At Nguvu, we collect these stories so they can be heard, shared, and continued — from Tanzania to your home, and from one woman's hands to another's heart.
✨ Nguvu – Wear the Story of Strength.
