Meet Chanua – The Blooming Beachbag

Chanua means 'to bloom' in Swahili, and this beach bag is a garden in full blossom. Her kitenge print shows large, open flowers in deep blue and warm bronze on a dark background, finished with fine white details. Together they capture the beauty of the Tanzanian coast: the deep blue of the Indian Ocean and the sun-warmed earth along the shore.

This bag is lovingly handmade in our atelier in Mtwara, where women are given the opportunity to learn the craft. Mama Fatuma chose this print because the big flowers remind her of the blossoms that burst open in the gardens of Mtwara after the rains, a sign of new life and fresh beginnings. The blue reflects the sea she sees every day, and the warm bronze tones bring the richness of the African soil.
